Adair Sheriff's Office warns of telephone scam

Please be aware of the phone scame and do not give out any personal information.- CHIEF DEPUTY B.J. BRAY

By Adair County Chief Deputy Sheriff BJ Bray

COLUMBIA, KY (18 October 2011) - I have received calls from the community today in reference to a scam.

There has been a man calling folks and informing themthat they have been selected to receive a Government Grant.

The man claims that only 200 people get selected each year for this particulargrant. The value of the grant that you would receive is $7,000.00.

He then informs you that you can be paid several ways. He suggests usingyour checking account or going through Western Union.

Western Union only allows $1,000.00 transactions. When you inform the man of the issuewith Western Union, he then informs you that he can take care of thatproblem if you send him some money, usually $125.00.

I have tracked the cell phone the man has been using to an unknown cellphone in the Washington, DC area.

These scams usually have you to send yourmoney out of the country and therefore can never be retrieved.Thanx, BJ Bray - CDAC
