Parents of the precious little Dunn twins urge support for RMH After the babies were born prematurely, when Conner's vitals were catastrophic and there was no way Barry and Leslie Dunn would have been away from him, Ronald McDonald House was there for them. There for them for six nights. And with the excellent care of his doctors and the wonderful NICU, the prayers of the Dunns and of so many Adair Countians. were answered. Now, Barry and Leslie Dunn ask everyone to join them in helping to repay Ronald McDonald House with donations for the 2011 RMH Wish List, for the invaluable role the RMH played in helping these two precious little boys survive and thrive, and be the blessing they are today. By Barry Dunn Columbia and Adair County are known for supporting a wide range of philanthropic endeavors. Leslie and I, though now residing in Louisville, kindly ask you to add one more cause to the list--Ronald McDonald House Charities. Though Ronald McDonald House Charities has its own motto, mission, and branding, we want to provide our own for your consideration: because of Ronald McDonald House Charities, we didn't have to leave our newborns. Our Story Leslie and I recently had twin boys, Conner and Ethan. Our sons were born prematurely. At first, everything progressed normally and we were the proud parents of two handsome, yet small, babies. Ethan continued to progress and never had any health complications. He was released after eighteen days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Unfortunately, Conner was different. A NICU doctor awoke us at 3:30amCT, on the last night of Leslie's scheduled stay at the hospital. Conner was not doing well. In fact, he was struggling to survive. His oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels over the previous few hours were catastrophic. Leslie and I immediately walked down the hallway to the NICU, and there began summoning everyone we knew to pray for Conner, including a tremendous number of Adair County residents. I am happy to report that the prayers worked, and Conner was released from the NICU recently after a four-week stay. But that is not the point of this plea. As the day progressed and Conner's outlook was unknown, we realized that we no longer had a place at the hospital to stay. What would we do? Thankfully, Ronald McDonald House Charities was there for us. Ronald McDonald House Charities is best known for the accommodations it provides to parents of sick children through Ronald McDonald Houses, like those in downtown Louisville and on UK's campus in Lexington, and Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms, which are located at hospitals. Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville has Family Rooms that are assigned daily based upon each babies' criticality (the Ronald McDonald House in downtown Louisville bases assignments on each families' distance from Kosair Children's Hospital). Needless to say, Conner topped the list and we were assigned a room--for the next six nights. There was NO way we were leaving Conner, even to drive the twenty minutes from the hospital to our house. Again, thankfully we didn't have to. The Ronald McDonald House Family Room provided everything we needed during our stay: food, linens, and toiletries to name a few. And we were only a two-minute walk from the NICU. All this is a long-winded way of asking you take a brief moment to reflect upon how you can assist other families in need, families like yours and mine. Leslie and I strongly encourage you to assist the good people at Ronald McDonald House Charities in delivering upon their mission. Let them know that Columbia and Adair County appreciate their work. Doing so will help the Ronald McDonald House support families having the worst day of their lives to remain near their child. Each and every family using the Ronald McDonald House, though you will likely never meet them, will thank you. Trust me. With great appreciation, -Barry and Leslie Dunn The writer of this story, Columbia, KY native Barry Dunn, practices commercial litigation with Louisville, KY, law firm of Stoll Keenon Ogden, LLC.
