Downtown days show difference volunteers make Accolades for Downtown Days, but editor of Columbia's most influential newspaper, IT'S JUST FOR A SMILE NEWS, suggests greater scrutiny of what was achieved, what it cost, and what real benefits to local businesses were achieved before too many Self-Congratulations are heaped by the Self-Congratulationists on themselves. And for those who want dessert before their meal, go straight to Ralph Waggener's PS, in which the writer straight up endorses going wet as just Good Common Sense By Ralph Roy Waggener A guest editorial written with unCommon Sense The Downtown day's celebration was a big success again. Being out of town, I'll need to take brother Ed Waggener's opinion as written in Columbia Magazine. Downtown Days seem to get bigger and better ever year. It's a program which is put on from the help of a lot of volunteers - a commodity Columbia seems to have an endless supply of. Of course a lot of work is performed by Columbia City employees. The work we get from volunteers in our city makes the big difference. The City/County Fire Department. is a volunteer department which gets some assistance from the city. Just think of the cost we would incur if we had to have an all paid fire department like Campbellsville has. The Garden Club took over the Gardens on the Public Square from city workers. No offense to the Donnie Rowe workers - they do pretty good work. But the Garden Club just knows how to do flowers and have a much better knowledge of the aesthetics of - gardening for show - than the city workers; besides, their work has freed the City Street Department up to do what the they do best. With the success of the Downtown Days should we not take a more indepth look at the economic factors of this great gathering and see if more economic benefits can be wrung from it to help our local businesses in and around the square?Shouldn't we put more thought into aiding existing businesses to make this an even more economically prosperous event. After we're through patting ourselves on the back for the crowds drawn to it, we need to analyze how to make this a more profitable event for Columbia, a less costly one for CIty Taxpayers, KY? I hope we don't get so self congratulatory as to forget what makes Columbia work. The people, the volunteers, and yes, the local businesses.Being a business person I know that when we do anything it needs to pay for itself. The city should have used the same practices, applied to city promotions. After all, why are we having the Downtown Days for? Isn't it to promote down town business while affording a great experience for visitors to our city. Not knocking a good show. It was great and very well staged. I'm just thinking how you can make it better. The many volunteer hours put into this project have to be commended by all of us. All that said: Isn't Columbia a great place. It's Columbia's great mix of people, particularly our great volunteer base, that makes it the best place to live in the world. -RALPH ROY WAGGENER. PS: Having Columbia voted wet just makes common sense, better control of alcoholic beverages. And a reminder that a serving before evening meals is considered to be very healthy. All things in moderation. This story was posted on 2011-10-16 12:12:55
