Proud Day for America - and for Adair Co., KY

'No one with a heart could have watched the televised ceremony with a dry eye. We teared up for one reason--admiration for and pride in Sgt. Meyer, Adair County, Kentucky and the United States of America.' -MIKE WATSON

By Mike Watson

Author of Adair County, KY Histories

Unknown to most Americans, but certainly not to Adair Countians, there is yet another reason to be proud. With the ceremonial presentation of the Medal of Honor to Dakota Meyer at the White House on Thursday, Americans were able to see first hand evidence of the monumental efforts men and women have made; efforts to maintaining our nation's status as an enduring monument to the spirit of freedom, valor and personal strength when confronted with overwhelming obstacles.

The United States was founded and has expanded upon the premise that one man or woman can always make a difference. Sgt. Meyer's actions now serve to inspire a new generation to continue the fight for freedom from oppression; to compel others to aspire to greater summits in every avenue of life and to travel where ever life may propel them.

No one with a heart could have watched the televised ceremony with a dry eye. We teared up for one reason--admiration for and pride in Sgt. Meyer, Adair County, Kentucky and the United States of America.

Adair County has a long history of brave fighting men and women, this tradition will long endure.
