Somerset PTA students recognized at national conference Students from Burkesville, Campbellsville, Columbia, Danville, Jamestown, Lexington, and Science Hill are among those recognized at the 2011 Pittsburg-Marquette Challenge Click on headline for full story, photo(s) By Cindy Clouse News from Somerset Community College Students enrolled in the Somerset Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program recently participated in the American Physical Therapy Associations Annual Conference and Exposition in National Harbor, Maryland. Eight receive National Awards of Merit 2011 graduates Erin Green of Danville and Chris Garland of Burkesville were recognized as national award winners and current students Brandon English of Lexington, Melissa Keith of Columbia, Mike Moore of Campbellsville, Glenn Trail of Lexington, Samantha Walls of Stanford, Josh Yancey of Science Hill accepted the Outstanding PTA Program Award and Award of Merit for the programs participation in the 2011 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge. Erin Green wins APTA Outstanding PAT Student award Erin Green received the 2011 American Physical Therapy Associations Outstanding PTA Student Award. The award is presented annually to one student nationwide who has demonstrated excellence in academics, community service, campus involvement, and who has demonstrated a commitment to the profession of physical therapy. She was praised for her role in coordinating campus and community service activities and for clinical and academic excellence by APTA President Scott Ward. This is the fifth year in a row for an SCC student to be honored with the award. Past winners include: Valarie Cooper, Jamestown, 2010; Rod Edwards, Somerset, 2009; Bethany Gosser, Liberty, 2008; and Heather Tuel, Somerset, 2007. Chris Garland receives Mary McMillan Scholarship Award Chris Garland received the Mary McMillan Scholarship Award, which honors Mary McMillan, a dedicated pioneer of physical therapy in the United States and abroad, the founding President of the American Physical Therapy Association, and an esteemed teacher. The intent of the award is to recognize students who exhibit superior scholastic ability and potential for future professional contribution. Awards are made on a competitive basis and recipients are selected based upon superior scholastic performance, past productivity, evidence of potential contribution to physical therapy and service to the American Physical Therapy Association. Garland has been active at the local, state and national levels and is highly respected by her peers and members of the profession and has received recognition and numerous awards for her community service and academic background. SCC program named 'Most Successful PTA Program' The program was also recognized as the Most Successful PTA Program and received the Award of Merit in the Pittsburgh - Marquette Challenge. This event is a national fundraiser for physical therapy research and conducted in conjunction with other Foundation for Physical Therapy fundraisers. Students in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 SCC PTA Program classes participated in the fundraising efforts. The overall winner of the event was the University of Pittsburgh. While attending the conference, the students had additional opportunities to participate in other local activities including tours of historic Washington, DC and Old Alexandria and to participate in various APTA-sponsored activities. Students Brandon English, Melissa Keith, Mike Moore, Glenn Trail, Samantha Walls and Josh Yancey also took part in the APTAs Federal Advocacy Forum, allowing them to meet with lawmakers and legislative aids in Capitol Hill to discuss PT-related legislation. Students attending this years conference included: Brandon English, Chris Garland, Erin Green, Melissa Keith, Debbie Lasure of Stanford, Stephanie Meade of London, Mike Moore, Glenn Trail, Samantha Walls and Josh Yancey.
