Round the World Cyclist stops in Columbia, KY Thirty-two year old cyclist from Vancouver, BC, decided to make life changes after three friends had heart attacks in a 6-month period. He's on the trip of his life, cycling around the world, which necessarily brought him through Columbia, KY, the only way to New Orleans, LA, his next stop. He was here as the guest of writer Gary Rose and Diane Rose Click on headline for complete story plus photo(s) By Gary Rose BicyclingAdair.org Dave Conroy a Vancouver, British Columbia cyclist is on a trip of alifetime, or should I say a trip for his life, a planned five-yearjourney that is to take him around the world. Dave a thirty-two year old Computer Specialist, started planning histrip in 2008 after a three friends had heart attacks in a 6-monthperiod. Not wanting to suffer the same fate and having the feelings ofbeing burned out at work, Dave decided that something had to change inhis life. Dave started selling off his possessions in 2009 and movedinto a furnished apartment and while getting the rest of his affairs inorder while doing some shake down trips that took place along thewestern US and northern Canada. Since departing Vancouver in early April of 2010, Dave has traveledacross Canada from the Pacific to the Atlantic where he reached the mosteastern part of North America on November 7, So far on this trip, in the United States he has cycled in Maine, NewHampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, NewJersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, andKentucky. Even though Dave has a planned route, his route isconstantly changing, daily or even hourly. When trying to cross theOhio River to get into Kentucky, the bridge listed on all of his mapswas not there. Detour time. Since departing Pittsburgh, because of theheat and humidity, he has cut back on his daily mileage (51.25 miles theday he arrived) and has changed the time of day he is riding. Currentlyhe is doing more riding in the early mornings and early to late eveninghours. Dave has encountered a few problems along the way. He waschased by 27+ Bison in Canada, was shot at by a Woodcock Hunter whomistook him for a Black Bear, attacked by Eagles. Numerous wrong turns, some by following the GPS and others by ignoring the GPS. He has brokenall the toes on his right foot, not at the same time and not while onthe bike, but off. His longest climb (20 miles up and 20 down) was atthe Monashee Pass in British Columbia, "It only took 6 hours to get tothe top and one down the other side." The steepest grade (17%) was atCape Spear. He reached a top speed of 46 mph with 120 pounds of gear inPennsylvania. Diane and I hosted Dave during his one night stay in Columbia while onhis way towards New Orleans, his next major city to visit. Davecontacted me via Warmshowers.org, a hospitality site for touringcyclists that members (Dave and myself are members) offer travelingcyclists a place to pitch a tent, or a bed, and what ever else they wantto offer for free. Of course a Warm Shower is always offered. Dave isthe second international cyclist that Diane and I have hosted. In Mayof 2008 Tomasz (Thomas) Chyzinski from Poland stopped by on his finalleg of his 2.5-year long trip from Poland via South America to HamiltonOntario. You can follow Dave on his journey via his website www.tiredofit.ca Gary Rose, BicyclingAdair.org This story was posted on 2011-06-07 17:27:40
