Sophia Burton, Adair Co., KY (1928-2011)

She was a member of a large, esteemed Northwest Adair County family. She leaves 45 direct living descendants. She was the oldest living member of the Purdy Separate Baptist Church. Her career as a cook at Col. Wm. Casey School spanned 23 years.

Sophia Burton, 83, of the Purdy community of Adair Co., KY, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 10:40pmCT at her home.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 1pmCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY,with Bro. Jamie Bryant, Bro. Junior Holmes and Bro. Todd Akin officiating. Burial in Bearwallow Cemetery, 6080 Liberty RD, Columbia, KY. Visitation after 2pm, Friday, June 3, 2011, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home.

She was born Sunday April 24, 1928, in Adair Co., KY. She was the daughter of the late John R. and Dorinda Bryant Burton. She died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at her home in the Purdy community of Adair Co., KY, at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 8 days.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 1pmCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY,with Bro. Jamie Bryant, Bro. Junior Holmes and Bro. Todd Akin officiating. Burial in Bearwallow Cemetery, 6080 Liberty RD, Columbia, KY. Visitation after 2pm, Friday, June 3, 2011, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers; Rollin, Norman, Lawrence, Pete and Jimmy Burton and two sisters, Bertha Giles and Maude Sinclair.

She was the oldest member of Purdy Separate Baptist Church and was a cook at Colonel William Casey School for 23 years.

Survivors include the following:
  • Her husband: Gilbert Burton of Columbia, KY

  • Five sons: Billy (Pam) Burton, Bobby (Sharon) Burton, Johnny (Patricia) Burton, Ronnie Burton, Keith (Tammy) Burton all of Columbia, K

  • Three daughters: Charlotte Goben of Columbia, Diana Marcum of Inverness, FL, Dorothy Gaskin of Columbia, KY

  • Two brothers: Edward "Cotton" Burton of Columbia, Coy Burton of Campbellsville, KY

  • Two sisters: Marie Sallee of Edinburgh, IN; and Reba Tankersley of Campbellsville, KY

  • Fifteen grandchildren

  • Twenty-two great grandchildren
