Campbellsville University repeats as MSC President's Cup Winner Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY, places 3rd, after CU and University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, KY By Chris Megginson News from the Campbellsville University Athletics LOUISVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University claimed its second straight Mid-South Conference President's Cup as competition towards the all-sports trophy ended on Saturday. Campbellsville won the year-long competition with 111.5 points. University of the Cumberlands finished second with 104 points and Lindsey Wilson College finished third with 102.5 points. The 7.5-point margin is the widest in the history of the trophy. "It is exciting for our department and the university to win the Presidents Cup again this year. We are blessed to have a dedicated coaching staff, hard working student-athletes and great support from our fans. To win this award in the MSC is not an easy task. This is, in my opinion, the most competitive conference in the NAIA," said Rusty Hollingsworth, CU athletics director. "These things are not accomplished without the support of our president, board of trustees and administration. This is an award the entire campus community can celebrate." Points are awarded based on the final regular season standings for each conference-sanctioned sport. The regular season champion in each sport receives 10 points; second place receives nine points, etc. At the conclusion of the season, the top six male and top six female team finishes for each institution generates the institution's overall totals and thus the MSC President Cup winner. Campbellsville won or shared six different conference regular season championships during the 2010-11 season. The Tigers captured titles in baseball, women's basketball, women's tennis and wrestling while sharing regular season titles in women's golf and men's tennis. Campbellsville also earned 10 points in men's and women's track & field for being the top finisher of the full-time members at the track & field championships. The Tigers claimed their first President's Cup in program history at the conclusion of the 2009-2010 season and are only the third institution to win the honor in back-to-back seasons. Georgetown College was the first to be a repeat winner in the springs of 2001 and 2002. University of the Cumberlands leads MSC members with seven first-place finishes. "Congratulations to Athletic Director Rusty Hollingsworth, all of the CU coaches, and the student-athletes on the various teams, for winning our second consecutive Mid-South Conference President's Cup," said Dr. Michael V. Carter, university president. "The Mid-South Conference is generally recognized as perhaps the strongest athletic conference in the NAIA, and for CU to win the President Cup for two consecutive years, indicates that our Campbellsville University coaches and student-athletes are doing a fine job in intercollegiate athletic competition. This is another recognition for Campbellsville University and our overall athletic program." Cumberlands finished second in the 2010-2011 race for the President's Cup after winning cheerleading, men's golf and sharing the women's golf regular season title. Lindsey Wilson won regular season titles in women's soccer, softball and shared the regular season titles in women's golf and men's tennis. Georgetown College -- who won regular season titles in men's basketball and football and shared the title in volleyball -- finished fourth with 101 points and Shawnee State University -- who won regular season championships in men's and women's cross country and shared the volleyball title -- ended in fifth with 81.5 points. University of Rio Grande (71), University of Virginia's College at Wise (57), St. Catharine College (49.5), Pikeville College (49) and West Virginia University Tech (35.5) rounded out the 10-team final standings.
