Cape and Furnish Named LWC Scholar-Athletes of the Year Columbia, KY, baseball team member Derek Cape and Bardstown, KY, cross country and track and field athlete Megan Furnish are honored at Lindsey Wilson's Founders Day Honors Convocation Click on headline for story plus photo(s) By Chris Wells News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - Derek Cape and Megan Furnish were named Lindsey Wilson College Scholar-Athletes of the Year today at the college's annual Honors Convocation as part of Founder's Day on the A.P. White Campus. The pair earned the award based on their academic, athletic and civic achievements throughout their Lindsey Wilson careers. "Derek and Megan are shining examples of what is right in college athletics," LWC athletics director Willis Pooler said. "They are people of high-character who embrace their academics, their athletics and their community involvement with extraordinary passion. We honor their achievements with this well-deserved award." Cape is from Columbia, KY Cape, a Columbia, KY, native, is a three-year member of the Lindsey Wilson College baseball team. He is a junior Physical Education and Health major with a 3.73 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Cape owns a 16-12 career record for the Blue Raiders with a 3.47 earned run average -- which ranks second all-time in the program's history. His 14 complete games are sixth all-time and he has amassed 166 strikeouts in 171 career innings. This season on the mound, Cape finished with a 7-4 record and a 1.65 ERA. Of his four losses, two came in 1-0 setbacks facing the opposing team's top pitcher. Cape was a member of the 2010 All Mid-South Conference Gold Glove team and was honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore. The 2011 all-conference awards will be announced this weekend. In the classroom, Cape is a two-time Academic All Mid-South Conference performer and this season earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete -- reserved for juniors and seniors with at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Furnish is from Bardstown, KY Furnish, a Bardstown, Ky., native, is a four-year member of the Lindsey Wilson College cross country and track & field teams. She is a senior Middle Grades Education major with a 3.25 GPA. Furnish is a three-time NAIA All-American in track & field. She earned All-American honors at the 2009, 2010 and 2011 NAIA Indoor National Championships for finishing in the top-six in the 3,000-meter Race Walk. She earned All Mid-South Conference honors last season at the MSC Track & Field Championships and will go for her second straight all-conference honor this weekend in Rio Grande, OH. Furnish owns the Lindsey Wilson program record in the women's 3,000-meter indoor race walk and the women's 5,000-meter outdoor race walk. She also holds the MSC 5,000-meter race walk record. Academically, Furnish is a two-time Academic All Mid-South Conference performer in cross country and twice earned the honor in track & field. "Derek and Megan are outstanding students, athletes and individuals, and are very deserving of this prestigious award," Pooler said.
