Individual performances also by Jessica Massengale of Vine Grove, KY, and Gloria Dawn Moore of Grayson, KY. Professor of Music Robert Reynolds will accompany on piano. Concert will be conducted by Dr. Gerald Chafin and will feature Dwayne Martin, who will perform bass solo. By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - The Lindsey Wilson College community will celebrate May Day with a season-ending concert by its choral groups. The concert, which will include the Louisville Symphony Strings, will be performed at 7pmCT on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY. The concert is free and open to the public. The May 1 concert will feature mostly classical pieces and a couple 20th-century selections. The concert will be directed by LWC Associate Professor of Music and Religion and Director of Choral Programs Gerald Chafin. It will also feature Columbia resident Dwayne Martin, who will perform a bass solo. "We are grateful to the Christian Church for hosting these events when we bring the Louisville Symphony to Columbia," Chafin said. "Their close proximity to campus makes the church a perfect location because we have so many families of our students coming for this concert." In the first part of the concert, LWC's choral groups will perform "The Heavens Are Telling" from Haydn's Creation; "In Te Domine" from Mozart's Te Deum; and the two beloved 20th-century anthems, "Offertory" and "With a Voice of Singing." The pieces will be accompanied by LWC Professor of Music Robert Reynolds and the Louisville Symphony Strings. The second part of the concert will feature student solos, all of which are from Handel's Messiah. Christian Talley of Columbia will perform "The Trumpet Shall Sound" on trumpet. His performance has its origins in an assignment given by Reynolds. "He was challenged to transpose the piece for his instrument," Chafin said. "That is actually a strange task, because the piece was written to be performed as a bass vocal solo. The piece does include a trumpet part in the instrumentation, but what's interesting about Christian's performance is that he actually plays the vocal line on his instrument." Jessica Massengale of Vine Grove, KY., will perform "O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion," and Gloria Dawn Moore of Grayson, KY, will perform "Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter of Zion." In the concert's third section, Reynolds will be joined by violinist Saelim Jung and cellist Saulo DeAmeida, both of the Louisville Symphony Strings, in performing Beethoven's "Trio in B-flat." They performed the piece live earlier this month on WUOL-FM's Lunchtime Classics program. In addition to closing out LWC's 2010-11 Cultural Affairs Series, the May 1 concert will also mark the 12th time LWC choral groups have performed with members of the Louisville Symphony. "We enjoy our partnership with the Louisville Symphony," Chafin said. "We believe it is important that we provide orchestral experiences for our choral students as well as for our community." The following will be taking part in the performance: Instrumentalists: Jack Griffin, violin I; Saelim Jung, Violin I; Elisa Saplding, violin II; Isabells Christensen, violin II; Whitney McCurdy, Viola; Saulo DeAlmeida, Cello; Robert Docs, bass Lindsey Wilson Concert Choir - Spring 2011 Soprano: Cyndi Carter, Alex Cogdell, Rachel Copass, Brittany Corbin, Jannah Davis, Katelin Frederick, Caitlyn Harrod, Sara Keller, Lacy Martin, Gloria Moore, Christina O'Rourke, Chelsea Pike, Leikka Shepard, Jessica Stotts, Jessica Turner, Caitlin Underwood, Janelle Weed, Frances Wilson, Melissa Wheeler, Tiffany Young, Nikki Wyrick.
