LOUISVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University women's tennis was presented its first Mid-South Conference championship trophy Friday, April 22, 2011, at the MSC Tournament Banquet.

"It's great to have this. Hopefully we can have a good week and win the tournament also," said CU head coach Kyle Caven.

The MSC Women's Tennis Tournament began Friday night with Georgetown College beating Shawnee State University, 8-1, and University of the Cumberlands beating University of Virginia's College at Wise, 9-0. Campbellsville (14-4) will take on Georgetown in the MSC semifinal Saturday night at 6 p.m. ET at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The regular season championship trophy was not the only award Campbellsville University claimed Friday, as the Lady Tigers' No. 1 singles player Tanya Murtagh was named the 2011 MSC Freshman of the Year. She was joined as an All-Conference singles player by her doubles partner Anita Henestrosa, the 2010 MSC Freshman of the Year.

"They're solid players. They go out and work hard every day and go get it," Caven said. "It's good to get the Freshman of the Year award two years in a row."

Murtagh, a native of Dublin, Ireland, played most of the year at No. 1 singles, posting a 9-3 record. She was 4-0 at No. 2 singles. Henestrosa, who played most of the season at No. 2 singles with an 11-1 record and was 3-1 at No. 1 singles. Together, the duo was 13-3 at No. 1 doubles.

In addition to the All-Conference honors Henestrosa was joined by Melanie Jones as a MSC Academic All-Conference selection as a student-athlete of sophomore academic status with at least a 3.25 GPA.

Three Lady Tigers received MSC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors: Gleidys Salazar, Aspen Edwards and Kristen Hamrick. Salazar and Edwards each posted 10-5 records in singles action, while Hamrick was 13-4. Salazar and Edwards were both also named honorable mention doubles selections, as they posted a 10-5 record at No. 2 doubles.

"Gleidys, Aspen and Kristen are a huge part of our lineup. We've won a lot of matches this season because of the middle of our lineup," Caven said.

The MSC Player of the Year honor went to Lindsey Wilson College's No. 1 singles player, Trina Slapeka, who received the honor for the third consecutive year. Slapeka finished the regular season with a 13-2 singles record, including a 5-0 conference mark.

Other MSC All-Conference singles players are: University of the Cumberlands' Neesha Thirumalaichelvam; Georgetown College's Adrienne Bartlett and Haley Hart; and Lindsey Wilson's Slavica Milanovic and Laura Vergara.

In addition to Murtagh and Henestrosa, three doubles teams earned all-conference honors: Cumberlands' Thirumalaichelvam and Kelcey Bauer; Georgetown's Bartlett and Kaitlyn Thompson; and Lindsey Wilson's Slapeka and Milanovic earned all-conference honors.

In all, 11 student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors. Joining Henestrosa and Jones were Cumberlands' Bauer, Alissa Ellis and Kaitlin Smith; Georgetown's Bartlett and Hart; Lindsey Wilson's Slapeka and Vergara; and University of Virginia's College at Wise's Megan Buchanon and Kayla Kilgore.

Campbellsville Women's Tennis (14-4) will take on Georgetown in the MSC semifinal Saturday night, April 23, 2011, at 6pmET/5pmCT at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, 350 Warnock Street, Louisville, KY.
