Hi,

Lovely picture of the lichen-covered bird nest. You wondered if the lichens "took over" the nest after it was built. The answer is no, the bird decorated the outside of the nest with lichens (maybe a Parmelia), which serve as camouflage. Sounds like it worked, if you initially thought the nest was a knot on the tree.
