Suggestions on finding military records

About: Wants to know authority on Veteranspast and present of Adair Co., KY

By "Jim"

I'm a far cry from being an expert on military records, but there are a couple of sources Mr. Patton may want to check.

One is the National [Military] Personnel Records Center website. Included at this site is a printable form (Standard Form 180) to request military service records.

If the gentleman about whom information is being sought served from Adair County during the World War II or Korean War era (and probably later), it would be worthwhile to check Veterans' Discharge Books at the Adair County Clerk's office.

The information contained therein for each serviceman (and -woman) includes name, birth date & place, induction and separation dates and places, rank at discharge, medals, ribbons, or other recognitions received (expert rifleman, e.g.), the unit(s) in which s/he served, battle campaigns in which the serviceperson took part, and the like.

A certified copy of the appropriate page from this volume should be sufficient to obtain a military marker.
