WWII Vets Edgar Holmes, Willie (Bill) Janes make Honor Flight Click on headline for story plus eight photos (five frames) by Cathy Luttrell By Cathy Luttrell On Thursday, August 20, 2009, World War II Veterans Edgar Holmes and Willie "Bill" Janes embarked on a trip they thought they would never make in their lifetime. They were able to fly to Washington, DC, to visit the World War II Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial. Each veteran was accompanied by a chaperone to assist them on the trip. Mr. Holme's chaperone was his granddaughter, Beth Holmes. Mr. Janes was chaperoned by Jimmy Luttrell, who is the Senior Vice Commander at Columbia VFW Post 6097 and Senior Vice Commander of VFW District 8. The one day trip was made possible by the Bluegrass Chapter of Honor Flight. Honor Flight is a wonderful program available to World War II Veterans. It provides the trips at absolutely no charge to the veteran. Chaperones are able to attend at a cost of $250 each. This program is made possible by donations from professional groups, businesses and individuals. Sadly, approximately 1,500 World War II Veterans die each day. Time is running out for them! Honor Flight Bluegrass Chapter accepts donations to help continue this noble mission. To donate, make check payable to "Honor Flight" and mail to: Honor Flight, P. O. Box 43986, Middletown, KY 40253-0986. For more information, you can visit their website at: www.honorflightbluegrass.orgEdgar and Bill both stated they tremendously enjoyed the trip and that it brought back a lot of memories. They were very thankful for being given this opportunity. This story was posted on 2009-08-25 06:13:34
