Over 100 veterans at LWC Veterans Appreciation luncheon LWC alumnus and author Russell Lunsford addresses group By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs COLUMBIA, KY - Freedom is not free. That was the message delivered by Army veteran Russell Lunsford at theannual Lindsey Wilson College Veterans Appreciation Luncheon, heldMonday, November 10, 2008, at the college's Roberta D. Cranmer Dining& Conference Center. "The freedom we have today has been paid for and continues to be paidfor with the blood of American servicemen and -women," Lunsfordsaid. Lunsford, a Lindsey Wilson alumnus, told more than 100 veterans andveterans' survivors that a veteran has been defined as "someone, whoat some point in their life, wrote a blank check payable to the UnitedStates of American for the amount of - and up to and including - hisor her life." Consequently, America's "freedom account" has millions of checks init, Lunsford said. "America's freedom bank account is heavy with blank checks signed bymillions of veterans," said Lunsford, a Lindsey Wilson alumnus who nowlives in Elizabethtown, Ky. "Freedom is not free - it wasn't in 1776and it isn't today." Lunsford is also author of Letters From A Captive Heart: America's Heartbreak in the POW Camps of North Korea, anovel based on the experiences that American prisoners of war enduredduring the Korean War. Part of the book is based in the Adair Countycommunity of Fairplay, or Gadberry as it was once known. Lunsford recently served two tours of duty of the U.S. war onterrorism. He was stationed in Kuwait on his last tour, while his son,David, was in the military police in Iraq. Both Lunsford and his son returned home safely. But Lunsford notedthat some American families have not been so fortunate; thousands ofmilitary personnel are still classified as "missing in action." "Many have gone to their grave not knowing what happened to theirloved one," Lunsford said. "We must never forget the sacrifice of ourfamilies back home-- they too have signed a blank check for America." This story was posted on 2008-11-12 06:40:14
