Kentucky's schools are experiencing difficult financial times. Districts like ours that are most reliant on state funding (because of lower property tax values) are really struggling.

A Kentucky Department of Education news release on September 2, 2008 stated, "Spending on P-12 education in Kentucky, as a percentage of the state's General Fund, has declined since the early 1990s. In 1994, education spending represented 48 percent of General Fund monies. In the 2008-2010 biennial budget P-12 education receives 43.8 percent of the General Fund." This year alone, it was predicted that 90 Kentucky school districts would lose more than 900 school staff, and important programs would be cut.

Our schools need your help. It is critical that your state senator and representative in Frankfort know that the educational needs of our youngest citizens must be a top priority. Kentucky's future success depends on it. You can make a difference by contacting them to express your support for education. Please contact me at 384-2243 if you want more information or have a question about our school district. Paid for by candidate, Marsha Walker

Navigating the bypass: Greensburg St. going north

2008-10-09 - Greensburg ST, going north, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
GREENSBURG ST, KY 439, COLUMBIA, KY: It's no longer the simple "Y." Motorists will need to know that the directional signs mean the second left for KY 61 South. The immediate left is KY 439, to Hudson Street. Travelers north to Greensburg, and south to Burkesville use the center lane before choosing straight or left. Travelers to the Adair County School District Campus turn right, as do motorists going to Pelham Branch Road, or to KY 55 North. The crest of the intersection offers a dramatic view of Downey's Mill and beautiful farms and residences, but drivers will be in peril if they do not pay strict attention to the complicated crossing. The road is expected to be open sometime today, Thursday, October 9, 2008.

    Sigogglin clocktower? Not really

2008-10-09 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
WHILE THE FAMOUS OLD ADAIR COUNTY COURTHOUSE CLOCKTOWER appears to be leaning away from the landing path of these 39 pigeons, it's not really sigogglin--though we might draw more busloads of Canadian tourists if it were--the camera was. Shamarie writes: "The clock picture was taken the other after I dropped Dylan off at band. The birds just kept circling the clock. Ithought it was cool with the lighting." The photographer's eccentric behavior did attract attention. "One of the band kids saw me taking pictures while I was driving, so yes, I did end up pulling over. But it was funny when they asked me what I was doing." A Today Feature photo
