Phillip Coffey - on the Greatest Generation By Phillip Coffey My generation is so very blessed to have been reared by "The Greatest Generation" and the generation that reared them (parenthetically, Mom just gave me a half stick of chewing gum as in youth). She amazes me every day. Mom and her generation are sparse in numbers now. To whom shall we seek wisdom when they are all gone? Absolutely nobody that I know. We will be as gnats hovering over a cow patty, I fear, going about as the wind blows, no sense of direction in our collective souls. Each day so immersed with data the source of which we daily do not know.'I hear tell but really don't know'. Shall it profit me? is the question often asked by implication - that is the rationale often asked in the political theater of comedy and errors; nothing about sacrifice at the extreme level reached by the two generations I have known prior to mine. There will never be generations again that feared their well being daily with many having nothing except their faith in God, and fellow man/woman. No luxuries by many at all, but willing to give everything for our freedom. I recall visiting an amazing uncle to me with my Mom at a local nursing home. He said, in effect, "I have accomplished nothing." My uncle did not say it bitterly or wanting empathy whatsoever but it was his assessment at that moment (we all have those, occasionally I'm sure). Only time I recall not seeing him upbeat. I told him and Mom, effectively, "You and Mom have achieved more and overcome more than anyone of my generation or others that have followed."
