A birthday challenge - epic 100-mile Century bike ride Tom Waggener gave himself a personal challenge for his birthday and on a stunning April 25, 2026 completed a "century ride," a 100-mile bicycle ride. He made the trip in 5 hours and 20 minutes from his home in downtown Shelbyville to the courthouse square in downtown Columbia (exactly 100 miles). In the Columbia Magazine core area, he traveled through Holy Cross, Raywick, Campbellsville (avoided the busy Campbellsville Road traffic by skirting the lake on Lone Valley Road); and passed through Cane Valley which he called "a beautiful, under appreciated town." He took Keltner Road past Rowe Farms, then stopped for a landmark photo of his bike under the Betty's Country Cooking sign, before reaching the final stretch on Highway 55 into his native downtown Columbia. He made the trip on a Carbon road bike from Elves, a Chinese brand named after a Tolkien elf. It was bought as a frameset and assembled by Tom. Elves bikes do not come fully built; assembly is required and he says is more involved compared to mainstream brands like Raleigh or Schwinn (which come 85% assembled). Elves bikes typically arrive about 70% assembled. Tom says he enjoys the building process. He sells, assembles and repairs bikes and can be reached at tmwaggener@gmail.com .
