Writers' Day 2026 - celebrating our stories By Stephen Rodriguez My brother knocked down stalks. "Come on, keep up!" He wiped his sleeve across his nose and sniffled. Somehow we were sure of where we were but still unsure. Our dad had let us wander. He'd told us, "At the center of the maze they made a clearing--candy, drinks, and pizza! Make sure you get there quick before it's gone." We said we'd get there first and eat it all and ran ahead. We wandered through the maze for half an hour, looking for the center, expecting every turn to show a tent and tables set with mounds of endless pizza. He broke a stalk, but nothing stood behind it-- our world had opened to a pumpkin patch. "Shoot!" my brother said, and kicked a pumpkin, "I would have made it fine if not for you." I looked at him, afraid that I had lost us. He looked at me, scowled, and he kept walking. The pumpkins in the field were odd and ugly, misshapen, small or bruised. They were the ones no one had picked for carving, left to rot and fertilize the field for next year's crop. As we walked along the deep green wall of corn, thick leaves wavering, back to the parking lots I noticed a patch of red among the pumpkins. A fox--it lay there lifeless, jaw unhinged. I looked up at my brother, "Do you think it's real?" "Of course it's real," he said. "Look at the flies." I got on my knees and reached to touch it-- "Don't touch that! Don't you know it's full of germs?" It looked so lonely out there in the field-- I wondered if it knew that I was there. Its small black eyes looked lost. I took a pumpkin and pushed it to the fox. We kept on walking. This story was posted on 2026-05-14 14:57:54
