Carol Perkins: Don't These People Work? Previous Column: Celebration, Now, Come On By Carol Perkins "Don't any of these people work?" Guy said as we tried to get through the traffic from Culver's on Scottsville Road to the stoplight on the bypass. Every time we go to Bowling Green, he says the same thing. "Where are all these people going?" "Guy, you are a broken record. They may be retired. Hold on, pull over, and I'll stop cars and ask them why they are cluttering the highway. Next time we come, I'll call ahead to the Transportation Department and see if they won't block off the highway so you can get through." He suggested I leave him at home the next time I wanted a day trip, and I agreed. I told him that if traffic was his only problem, he didn't have much to worry about. That set him off. "Are you worried about something?" he showed concern. "Guy, I worry about everything. How long have you known me?" He said, "Oh, yeah, I forgot." I continued. "I worry that you'll get yourself so worked up that you'll have a heart attack. He picks the dumbest things to get "worked up" about. The other day, he drove through our local fast-food chain and ordered two cheeseburgers. "When I got home and sat down to eat them, I had two apple pies," he said. I asked about the cheeseburgers, thinking the apple pies might have been a bonus. "Oh, no, my burgers went into someone else's bag." "You know by now to check your order before pulling away," I scolded. "How can you get two cheeseburgers mixed up with two apple pies," he asked. He is diabetic but was so offended that he ate both pies. One thing that really annoys him is having to carry boxes containing Samaritan's Purse orders from the post office to my car. Then, eventually, from my car to our packing center. "One day I'm going to leave them at the post office," he threatened. I can't resist. "God's watching your sour face." His comeback is, "God's on my side." Most people become a little less agitated over trifles as they get older, but not Guy. He's turned into Archie Bunker, and I'm no Edith...yet.
