Letter: we are in unprecedented times in America

By Rodney White

Tip O'Neill supposedly said, "All politics is local," but maybe there are certain circumstances in which that is not true. It seems to me that we are living in unprecedented times in America when too many are unaware, too busy with the challenges of life, or simply apathetic to the events of the day.

This is not an indictment of the good folks of Adair County, but a reality all across the nation, and it is not only a recent occurrence in our civic life.

However, what makes today really unprecedented is that most of our political and social guardrails have come off. Violent and hateful rhetoric rarely is condemned, especially if it comes from one person and his minions as in the profane Easter morning message from the President to Iran, followed by his intent to "wipe out a civilization." Social media has proven to be detrimental to our body politic, and AI will likely be equally so.

I attempted to teach the checks and balances for years, but we do not have that now. We have a Congress missing in action, and one political party "all in" and along for the ride regardless of the damage. The ONLY guardrails we have at present are the lower courts and the press.

As a teacher for some 36 years, I finally realized that one of my roles was to follow Appalachian Linda DeRosier's quote, "Education, if it takes, changes the inside of our head so that we do not see the world that we previously saw."

Maybe this is easy for me to say, but I realize the constraints of being a journalist in this setting. However, as a journalist, maybe sometimes you do have to change what is inside people's heads.
