He cherished the simple pleasures of fishing, tinkering in his garage, and, most importantly, spending quality time with his family and friends. These passions enriched his life and left fond memories etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Joe is survived by his beloved fiancee, Sandy Firkins; his devoted sons, Joe Kelly Kerns and his wife Melissa of Richmond, Kentucky, and Matthew Kerns and his wife Keri of Russell Springs. Kentucky. Joe also leaves behind his siblings Shirley Wilson and Paul Kerns and his wife Holly, both of Russell Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents Forrest Craven and Lois Hill Kerns; his beloved wife, Carrie Smith Kerns; his son Nicholas Kerns; a great granddaughter Karrie Scruggs and his siblings Barney, Albert, Dwight, Ricky Kerns, and Jeanette Doss.

Funeral services will be held at 1pmCT Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with burial in the Kerns Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 6097.
