Road crews will remove illegally-placed signs Campaign, Non-Official Signs Prohibited on State Highway Right of Way. SOMERSET, Ky. - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) reminds residents, business owners, political candidates, and others that the placement of signs within state highway right of way is prohibited. Kentucky law and KYTC policy prohibit non-official signs of any kind--including campaign signs, yard sales, and other advertisements--from being placed on state highway right of way. This includes placement on utility poles, fences, guardrails, and official road signs. Depending on size and construction, illegally placed signs are a distraction and can be a safety issue for motorists when blocking the view of oncoming vehicles. Illegally-placed signs also can disrupt or endanger right-of-way operations such as mowing, ditch cleaning and litter removal, and can pose a direct safety hazard to motorists who run off the roadway - particularly when installed with large wooden or metal stakes. KYTC crews will remove any signs located within state highway right of way that restrict visibility or interfere with maintenance operations. Removed signs will be stored at the appropriate county highway garage within KYTC District 8 for up to two weeks. Any unclaimed signs will be discarded.
