Carol Perkins: Looking forward to Easter Week Previous Column: Metcalfe Co. celebrating America's 250th Anniversary By Carol Perkins Easter week. Oh, what a glorious time. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday. A full week of reflection and merriment. At the Edmonton Baptist Church on Maundy Thursday, we always have a program featuring seven speakers who depict the last words of Jesus. One year, I recounted what Jesus said to John from the cross. With suffering eyes, he looked at his mother and said, "Woman, here is your son," and to the disciple John, whom he loved, "Here is your mother." From that moment on, Mary lived with John, and he cared for her as if she were his mother. As Mary witnessed her son nailed to a cross and his suffering, we can't know the pain she felt just as we can't know the suffering a mother feels who has sat at the bedside of a cancer-ridden child, prayed while a son was in surgery after a motorcycle wreck, or wiped the forehead of a youngster with a raging fever. Only if we have been in her shoes can we know. How telling it was for Mary to hear Jesus tell John to take care of her. In the depths of agony, he was thinking of her. How many deathbed wishes and pleas have been to take care of Mama? Take care of Dad? Take care of a wife or husband? The Good News is that Jesus rose from the dead, and we celebrate his return on Easter Sunday. Children learn lessons about the cross throughout the year, but we don't criticize Easter as a time for childlike celebrations. The Easter bunny, chocolate bunnies that melt all over their face and hands, and new Easter clothes symbolizing new beginnings are expected. It gives us joy. We enjoy baked cakes and pies with ham and sweet potato casserole on the table. We gather with family and pray for the future. Our duty is to share his Word throughout the land, but let's not forget that some of our neighbors might need to hear it, too. Happy Easter.
