Shirley Mae Cartwright Young, Campbellsville, KY

Shirley Mae Cartwright Young of Campbellsville, Kentucky, was born May 4, 1935 in Louisville, Kentucky, to William Paul and Martha Beatrice Briner Cartwright. After her mother's death in 1935, she was raised by her grandparents, Arthur Frank and Roberta Cartwright.

She departed this life on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

Shirley had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a longtime member of Good Hope Baptist Church.

She united in marriage to Allen D. Young on June 20, 1959 after meeting at Campbellsville Junior College their freshman year. Together, they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage.

Shirley was a graduate of Campbellsville Junior College and the University of Kentucky. She began her teaching career in Louisville, Kentucky, and retired from the Taylor County School System in 1989 after 29 years. She primarily taught 1st and 2nd grade.

She found great joy in reading, traveling (they visited all 50 states), and most of all, spending times with those she loved. Shirley will be remembered for the special bond she shared with her family and friends, her unwavering positivity, her strong faith, and her unmistakable sense of humor that brought light to every room.

She is survived by her loving husband, Allen D. Young; her children, Toni Johnson and husband, Gary of Campbellsville, Trent Young and wife, Lee of Bowling Green and Tiffany Floyd and husband, Greg of Campbellsville; her six grandchildren: Brittany Hawes and husband, Jonathan of Greensburg, Leigh Anne Sluder and husband, Eric of Campbellsville, Allie Young-Martin and husband, Ryan Martin of Anacortes, Washington, Tate Floyd and wife, Savannah of Campbellsville, Katie Floyd and Carson Floyd, both of Campbellsville and her cherished great-grandson, Tatum Jaymes Sluder.

She is survived by two sisters: Betty Jane "Frankie" Quigley of Mitchell, Indiana and Pat Derrick of Springfield, Illinois and several nieces and nephews and many other friends and relatives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Gloria "Jean" Fancher and a baby brother lovingly known as Sonny.
