Letter: Big Clifty name? Donna Rieder writes: Big Clifty Creek isn't on the list on CM! I'd love to learn its history.Mike Watson says, "Big Clifty, a branch of Russell Creek, feeds in at the 'Sam Coffey Hole'; it has had this name since the early history of Adair County and is mentioned in deeds at least as early as 1809. Likely named for a slightly larger 'fall' along the stream--larger than the usual 'low' waterfalls on local streams." He adds, "There are several hundreds of places that aren't in the article--too many to mention even all the bigger ones. But some day there may be a book...if I live that long :) !"
