LCDHD to celebrate National Public Health Week 2026 From Jeff Neagle, Communications Specialist Lake Cumberland District Health Department The Lake Cumberland District Health Department (LCDHD) is proud to join communities across the nation in recognizing National Public Health Week, observed during the first full week of April each year (April 6 - 12, 2026). Organized by the American Public Health Association (APHA), this annual observance highlights the importance of public health and the many ways public health professionals work to improve the health and well-being of communities. National Public Health Week serves as an opportunity to celebrate progress in protecting community health while also raising awareness about the ongoing challenges that impact the well-being of families and individuals. Public health efforts touch nearly every aspect of daily life--from preventing the spread of disease and ensuring food and water safety to promoting healthy lifestyles and improving access to healthcare. "Our mission is to promote and protect the health of all who live, work, learn, and play in our district," said Amy Tomlinson, Executive Director of the Lake Cumberland District Health Department. "National Public Health Week is a great time to highlight the work being done to keep our communities healthy and to remind people that public health affects us all." LCDHD serves residents across ten counties in south-central Kentucky: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne. Through partnerships with local schools, healthcare providers, community organizations, and government agencies, LCDHD works to address the region's unique health challenges. Programs such as chronic disease prevention, substance use prevention, maternal support initiatives like the HANDS program, and health education campaigns all play an important role in improving residents' quality of life. In addition, LCDHD staff respond to public health emergencies, monitor infectious diseases, and provide guidance to help protect communities during outbreaks and other health threats. Public health is strongest when communities work together. By raising awareness and encouraging healthy habits, National Public Health Week highlights the role everyone plays in building healthier communities. The Lake Cumberland District Health Department invites residents to learn more about the services available in their area and follow them on social media for information, resources, and tips throughout the week. For more information about programs and services offered by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department, visit www.lcdhd.org or contact your local county health department.
