Wrestling Program ends successful first season The Adair County Schools Wrestling Program celebrated a highly successful inaugural season in February, marking an exciting milestone for student-athletes and the broader community. Led by Head Coach Abe Cross and Assistant Coach Derek Nickel, the team operates as both a club and a sanctioned school program. The program is officially sanctioned by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) and also operates under USA Wrestling for insurance coverage and organizational structure. Broad Participation and Inclusive Opportunities The program supports both boys' and girls' divisions and welcomes students in grades 4 through 8 to compete at the varsity middle school level, with fourth graders eligible based on age and size considerations. Weight classes are carefully structured to ensure safe competition, with the youngest participant currently competing in the 70-pound division. Practices are held Monday through Friday, with approximately 60 students and coaches participating each evening. Youth wrestlers typically join Monday sessions, helping introduce younger athletes to the sport while fostering a seamless developmental pipeline. While middle school officially begins at sixth grade, fourth- and fifth-grade students are welcomed based on size and ability. The program serves a wide age range - from 5 to 19 years old - and includes student-athletes from across the community, including both Adair County High School (ACHS) and ACMS. Participation is not limited to a single school population, further strengthening its community-wide reach. Athletic and Personal Development Impact Wrestling at Adair County is rooted in inclusion and opportunity. Unlike many traditional team sports, wrestling provides a competitive outlet for students of varying body types, skill levels, and athletic backgrounds. Success in the sport is driven by effort, technique, discipline, and a willingness to learn - qualities emphasized daily by the coaching staff. Beyond competition, the program promotes cardiovascular health, confidence, and character development. Coaches note that wrestling can be particularly impactful for students who may not feel at home in mainstream team or ball sports, offering them a place to grow and succeed. The team culture has quickly become one of its defining strengths. Athlete turnover remains low, and older wrestlers actively mentor younger teammates, creating a supportive, family-like environment. This positive culture recently contributed to a historic milestone for the program: its first female state placer. Enrollment and Community Engagement Families interested in joining the Adair County Wrestling Program can connect through the school system or follow the program on Facebook and Instagram for updates. School contacts are also available for referrals and additional information. With strong leadership, growing participation, and a commitment to inclusion and excellence, the Adair County Schools Wrestling Program has established a solid foundation and looks forward to building on its early success in the seasons ahead.
