Carol Perkins: Austin bound Previous Column: Snow Stories By Carol Perkins A driving trip sounded like a good idea. We left two days after Christmas, headed for Austin, Texas, for a week. During that time, we would get to see four of Noah's basketball games. He's a senior, so opportunities like this are growing slim. I was more eager about the driving trip than Guy was, but neither of us wanted to fly. We needed our vehicle, and renting a car was an added expense we wanted to avoid. I visualized listening to podcasts, music, talking, and surfing TikTok for funny videos. Like a kid ready for a vacation, my bags were ready early the next morning. (Early for me is nine o'clock.) By the time we reached Bowling Green, we had run out of conversation. I couldn't find an interesting podcast (Guy doesn't enjoy them at all), nor could I find music we both enjoyed. So, I opened my People Magazine, and, after reading it from cover to cover, rested my head on the back of the seat and woke up in Memphis. "I'll drive," I said. From Memphis, I drove to Little Rock, where we spent the night. The next day would mean a full day's drive to Austin. By now, being on the road wasn't as much fun as I thought. While I drove, I listened to old-time gospel music and sang along as if I were a one-woman concert. I stopped at a few thrift stores (my hobby), but Guy wanted to "get there." Except for eating, he sees no reason to linger and look at the scenery. I would rather travel back roads. We got to Austin at eight, dropped by Jon's to see the family and unload gifts, then went straight to the hotel. After a tiring drive, I had time to relax before our lunch date and then on to Noah's early afternoon ballgame. Jon gave me an Anderson High sweatshirt to wear, and I just needed pompoms to complete the look. Like a seventeen-year-old senior, I couldn't wait for the game to begin. More to come...
