Roundab-out-reach by Pen Roundabouts are all the rage with new transportation projects in Kentucky, with dozens planned or installed in recent years. The US Department of Transportation confirms what Columbians have known all along: "Roundabouts are not only a safer type of intersection; they are also efficient in terms of keeping people moving. Even while calming traffic, they can reduce delay and queuing when compared to other intersection alternatives." The three recently completed roundabouts on Highway 555 offer a greatly reduced commute time through the outskirts of Springfield, on the way to metropolitan Willisburg, or maybe the Bluegrass Parkway. But that's only if all the drivers understand how they work, and on recent trips through the area I've seen some blatant unfamiliarity with the concept. Since Adair County has had a roundabout as our central transportation hub from maybe the late 1800s, it's easy to take for granted our community of drivers' ingrained understanding of the finer points of roundabout use and etiquette. It might be time for a marketing push to capitalize on our homegrown expertise. We could invite drivers and officials from "new roundabout towns" to come observe for a while before embarking on a few "practice runs" through our historic downtown on their way back and forth from Adair County points of interest like Lindsey Wilson University, the Adair County Genealogy & History Research Center, and out Highway 55 for a slice of homemade pie at Betty's.
