Letter: Quilt project By Yvonne Kolbenschlag Some years ago, the Center for Rural Development in Somerset promoted tourism to boost the economy with the concept that the counties consider themselves not as an individual county, but as part of a corridor offering tourism opportunities. I think there were at least 40 counties grouped in corridors of six counties in this major tourism project called TOURSEKY. Adair County was with five other counties. We worked together on numerous projects, one of which was the barn quilts. Sue Stivers composed a brochure showing photos and descriptions of barn quilts of our corridor. It was entitled "stitched together." She also had additional wooden squares made and painted of quilt patterns, in addition to the ones on barns. These are now displayed in the barn at Homeplace. It was Phil Hannah's idea to hang them there with explanations of the patterns. The Center for Rural Development provided matched grant money for paint I used to paint quilts on the cement wall by the parking lot at Sav-a-Lot. The quilts pictured are the ones that were mounted in Adair County. At that time the CEO of TOURSEKY was Jeff Crowe. He promoted planting of red bud trees also. So, I painted a crow in a red bud tree as part of the wall of quilts. EXTRA: At an earlier time, Houchens was located where Sav-a-Lot is. A major fire had blackened the cement wall. REALLY BLACK!! Mike Glasgow brought a tank truck filled with water and blasted the soot away! Not only was that a matching gift-in-kind, but it was also a kind gift! The wall needs washed again, please.
