Christmas gifts for needy children By Joyce M. Coomer Several charitable organizations have announced that they are collecting toys, coats and other items for needy children in the county. That is a very good thing, and I hope they are blessed with donations. However, I sincerely hope that what I saw happen a few years ago does not happen this year. A day or two after Christmas, I went to throw some food scraps in the dumpster and saw three large garbage bags on top, untied, so I looked into one of them and was not only shocked but heartbroken, for the bags were filled with new stuffed animals, tags still on them. Fortunately I knew someone who had a family member who ran a day care center and I let them know about the toys; they were delighted to get them. Please, please, please, please, please. If any charitable organizations receive more items than they need to fulfill the lists they have, donate them to other places. Daycare centers. Public schools. The library. Nursing homes; yes, nursing homes, for I'm sure there would be someone there who would enjoy having a teddy bear or a stuffed dog or cat. Police cars in case they have to transport children. J.O.Y. Ministries. Churches. Even the Judge's and Mayor's office, for someone there may know of a child who would enjoy a toy. I'm sure I've left out places where a new toy would be a blessing, so don't trash them, find a home for them. This story was posted on 2025-12-01 20:24:17
