Letter: Memories from the Past

Comments re: The Flag at ACMS

By Dave Rosenbaum

The photo of the flag at ACMS brought to mind an episode from many decades ago. For some undisclosed reason, the smartest student in our class decided to prank. He first went to Russell & Co. on the Square and purchased the largest pair of pink ladies bloomers that Russell had. He then proceeded to the White Cash Market and bought a can of Crisco. Then to ACHS, climbed the flag pole and hung the pink bloomers to wave in the wind. On the way back down the pole, he greased it with the Crisco.

Someone ratted out the fellow and Principal Brooks Coomer was anything but amused by the prank and, as punishment, banned the culprit from membership in the Beta Club. I'll just bet that it is the only recorded time that expulsion from the Beta Club was used as punishment.
