Travel: A trip to Aalborg, Denmark
Note: Veronica has kindly shared many images of her travels this past week, and we'll be adding several over the next few days. Please bookmark this article to see them all in one place.
By Veronica Arnold
We are in a city in northern Denmark called Aalborg. Has some buildings from the 1400s and 1500s! But today we were so tired that we wandered out for dinner, looked around and went back to our hotel.
As we went to bed, the night life was starting. Many pedestrian zones in the older parts of town. Popular food items we saw, Burgers! Yup. Everywhere. From a Burger King, to a British pub selling a pub burger to a falafel stand selling some next to pizza. Many were coming out for a small meal, they eat a bigger one in middle of the day. Then once they have their smaller meal, they meet up and have a drink. Even though it was cold outside, still many stay outside having a pint.
I attached a picture of one pub which apparently likes Holstein cows. A disco cow! This traveler left that scene for a comfy bed and good slippers!
Ciao ciao,
-Arnolds of Fairplay

Travel: Exploring in Aalborg

2025-10-26 - Aalborg, Denmark - Photo by Veronica Arnold. Veronica writes, "Spent the day touring Aalborg while my spouse was working. It was full of historical sites all over. A woman walking alone, I felt safe to wander and explore. I found museum of architecture which was lovely, and a monastery from the 1400s. Then I walked into what I thought was a park but it was a cemetery. But it was actually very beautiful. After I exited the cemetery there was a sculpture garden." Travel: Visit to a Norwegian beef farm

2025-10-27 - near Copenhagen, Denmark - Photo by Veronica Arnold. On her recent trip overseas, Veronica visited a beef farmer in Norway. Veronica says, "We talked regulations, crops, feed schedules... Was really good. Sadly no calves were born during my short visit. One was born as they left to come get me, and one was born after I left. The one born as my plane landed, they are naming that heifer calf 'Kentucky'." Travel: Finding the familiar, far away

2025-10-27 - Outside Copenhagen - Photo by Veronica Arnold. A roadside barn in a beautiful setting, on the other side of the Atlantic. Veronica writes, "Visiting Denmark as a a Kentuckian I was looking at what was growing in the fields, and types of cows and sheep I saw in fields. For you beef farmers, I saw lots of Herefords and Highlands and Parks. Hay was baked and wrapped and silage pits were full, covered in tarps, weighed down by tires. Yup, seemed like familiar sites to me." Read More... | Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.

Travel: Arnolds travel from Fairplay to Denmark

2025-10-28 - between Copenhagen and Aalborg, Denmark - Photo by Veronica Arnold. Veronica writes of her recent trip overseas, "We flew into Copenhagen and then drove north for a bit to catch a ferry, to shorten our drive time as we head further north. It's a bit colder here with lows in 30s and highs in 50s. When we saw the coast, we had to park, get out and walk a bit. It was cold but it was so cool to see a body of water I have never seen before. The shoreline was stony. Water was freezing, well not technically. With wind coming from the coast it feels colder I think." Read More... | Comments? | Click here to share, print, or bookmark this photo.

Travel: The Utzon Center

2025-10-30 - Aalborg, Denmark - Photo by Veronica Arnold. One of the many museums the Arnolds visited while in Denmark. Jorn Oberg Utzon (1918-2008) was a Danish architect best known for his design of the Sydney Opera House in Australia.
The Utzon Center in Aalborg was Jorn Utzon's last work of architecture. Located on the Limfjord waterfront in the city where Utzon spent his childhood, the building was completed in 2008, the year Utzon died.
In addition to the permanent exhibition of his work on display in the gallery hallways, the centre of architecture and design contains exhibition spaces, auditorium, workshop facilities for architecture students, children's workshops focussing on play and learning, a design shop and a restaurant, JORN, with a view over the harbour. Travel: Budolfi Church

2025-11-02 - Aalborg, Denmark - Photo by Veronica Arnold. The Budolfi Cathedral (Danish:Budolfi Domkirke) was built in the last decades of the 14th century over and around the original St Budolfi Church (built before 1132) and was listed for the first time in the Atlas of Denmark in 1399. The church was named after St. Botolph, an Anglo-Saxon abbot and saint. His reputation as a learned and holy man in Anglo-Saxon England and as the patron saint of farmers and sailors made him a popular saint in pre-Reformation Denmark. Travel: Lindholm Hill Viking Burial Grounds

2025-11-05 - Aalborg, Denmark - Photo by Veronica Arnold. On the Arnolds' trip, Veronica took a tour of Lindholm Hoje, a major Viking burial site and former settlement situated to the north of and overlooking the city of Aalborg in Denmark. Next door is a museum which features Viking era and iron age remains from 400ad to 900ad.
Veronica writes, "The museum inside starts with iron age artifacts and explanations of what the land was like during the early periods. The use of flint was common as access to metals wasn't common in the earth. Trade increased and then use of copper increased. Clothes changed from animal hydes to woven wool costumes.
Upstairs, the exhibits focuses more on the Viking era. Was funny to see the 'trading' that Vikings did which changed their own culture. Civilizations near coast lines were often raised by Vikings. Their jewelry and other goods were brought home to be traded within the Vikings' own society. Weird to see it from the Viking perspective. Very lovely area to view."
