Is 2025 The Year of the Raccoon?

The Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center has a tradition of naming years for the species of the first animal patient they treat. They say on a web post, "It's down to chance, or fate, or whatever force is behind cause and effect." Their first patient of 2025 was an orphaned baby raccoon, so 2025 is their year of the raccoon.

It seems that it's also been a year of the raccoon in Kentucky, if CM photos are any indication. Some years I rarely see a raccoon, but Summer 2025 seems to have been full of them. Click headline for a collection of photos...

Raccoons are everywhere this season

This Raccoon was probably thinking he'd really like to come in - climb through the kitchen window, sniff out the sink and dishes and enjoy any leftovers from dinner. Photographer Graham Waggener said no, but had to take a picture of the earnest face looking in his window.

Raccoon Summer becomes Raccoon Fall

2025-10-02 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Evan Waggener.
The Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center dubbed 2025 the Year of the Raccoon by chance, but it's also been a year of the raccoon in Kentucky, if CM photos are any indication. This small raccoon was spotted fishing or maybe looking for mussels along the shoreline earlier this week.
