Black Bear sighted in Adair County By Donna Rieder A black bear has been spotted near Clifty Creek Farm in Adair County. I've got my electric fences turned on around my chickens and bees. I'm not worried about the horse, but I AM locking the goats in the barn at night. The bear pictured has been checking out this whole area. It's got everything he needs for survival; food, water, shelter, not a lot of human activity... I won't be surprised if he hangs around. And I'm okay with that, he needs to live somewhere, as long as he stays away from my beehives! It's common for young male black bears to be looking for new territory this time of year. Papa bear says "time to move on boys" bc the females won't breed if they have young'uns with them. - DR Ed Waggener used to campaign for black bears to come to Adair County in order to increase tourism. Click here to see the only one he discovered in his lifetime - not a live one and not in Adair County, but close enough. Ed even maintained The official Blue Ribbon Bear Board for a few years if you'd like to visit it in the Columbia Magazine archives. - LW This story was posted on 2025-09-26 11:53:38
