No age limit on recovery: The Support Agency leads the way

The Support Agency, which is committed to fighting ageism and transforming attitudes about aging, was awarded a grant earlier this year by the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky to confront stigma around substance use disorder (SUD), particularly in older adults. Over the last six months, the agency has rolled out educational programs across the community to foster understanding and empathy.

According to Kentucky's 2024 Drug Overdose Fatality Report, all age groups saw a decline in overdose deaths except for one: adults ages 75-84, which showed an increase. This signals a rising risk among older Kentuckians.

Dr. Lynda Wilkerson, Executive Director of The Support Agency, says the program is beginning to make a difference by doing the following:

  • Training behavioral health professionals through workshops and the Community Collaboration for Children's regional conference, emphasizing first-person language to reduce stigma in clinical care.

  • Reaching senior centers, helping older adults understand stigma linked to aging and SUD, and encouraging them to seek help without shame.

  • Partnering with Black church leaders to address stigma within congregations and equip faith communities with supportive tools.

  • Educating the general public about the overlap of stigma and ageism and underscored that recovery knows no age limit.
Dr. Wilkerson says, "These efforts are breaking down harmful stereotypes, creating more supportive environments, and helping our community recognize that Substance Use Disorder does not define a person,"
