Event celebrates Montgomery ancestors, Shiloh Christian Church

By Mike Watson

The Memorial Day weekend was eventful for all, and in various ways. Christa Montgomery Gimbel, whose father was a native of the Joppa community of Adair County, hosted an event that celebrated not only her ancestor, Francis Montgomery, Sr., but also included the 150th anniversary of Shiloh Christian Church.

Saturday saw a group of Montgomery descendants and visitors convene at the Trabue-Russell House on Jamestown Street to tour the house and hear its history from curator Mary Ann Loy. Afterward, the group, joined by others, met at the Adair Genealogy & History Research Center for a catered lunch, followed by an excellent program on the Montgomery family from ancient times to the present, presented by Mrs. Gimbel.

The meeting was followed by a site visit to the Montgomery Cemetery at Joppa on highway 92 where new historical markers and landscaping were viewed and appreciated.

Then, on Sunday morning, several of the party joined Shiloh Christian for the morning service, and a program was given on the history of the congregation by Mrs. Gimbel. Then came a great lunch in celebration of the anniversary.

Sunday afternoon was spent touring and carefully examining the original Francis Montgomery, Sr. cemetery, located nearby Shiloh. More than a dozen intrepid explorers made the trek across fields and into the woods to discover many of the earliest Montgomerys buried in Adair County.

Thanks to all who participated in any and all the facets of this excellent experience. New friends were met and old acquaintances were reestablished.

The plaque reads:
Shiloh Christian Church is a testament to the deep religious beliefs of those who founded it. The church's first building was wooden, erected in 1875, and rebuilt with brick in 1952. Thomas B. Johnson donated the land originally, the Montgomery's donated the wood, and Jasper Bryant provided the carpentry. Quintellian "Kint" Montgomery built the first pulpit.

Richmond B. Reeves led the rebuilding of the church after it burned. Many amenities have been added since. Nearby Clear Springs School opened in 1911 and closed in 1953. It shared some of the church's facilities and burned in 2023.
