Kentucky Color: Aqua turquoise By Billy Joe Fudge One of the oddest and most beautiful colors found in nature is paraded on Eastern Red Cedar in late Winter and Spring. I call it aqua turquoise! Eastern Red Cedar is a dioecious species, meaning the male and female reproductive flower parts are on separate trees. Both trees have cones. The male has cones that hold the pollen and aren't very showy. These cones break open in late Winter or early Spring releasing the pollen which is carried on the wind to pollinate the more colorful cones found on the female trees. These female cones appear to be closed which would mean that pollination has occurred and the seeds are developing inside these most beautiful berry-like cones.
