The Solomon and Thompson J. Baker Rifle program By Mike Watson The April 7, 2025, meeting of the Adair County Genealogical Society was presented by Richard Phelps. He gave a rousing program on the history of the long rifle and its impact on the settlement of Kentucky and Adair County. He exhibited various rifles ranging over several decades and from various makers, all of note in the realm of firearms manufacture. Locally there were a handful of gunsmiths, including Solomon Baker, who operated a shop at Gradyville, and his son, Thompson Jefferson Baker. These locally sourced weapons were, and are still, highly sought-after and collectors search the nation for examples for their own collections and for others as well. Most of the known examples are in private hands, or in museums. However, Richard informed the large crowd that one may be hiding in an attic or barn and may still come to light in the future. In addition to showing some of his own collection of rifles, the speaker also exhibited photographs, publications, powder horns--most notable, the personal horn of local artisan and workworking expert, Ben Hancock--as well as shot used for various calibre weapons. If you missed this program, you missed a great one. More than forty attended the event, several from a considerable distance. A big thank you to Richard and Mary Beth Phelps!
