Kentucky Color: Spring Grackles By Billy Joe Fudge Of all the Blackbirds, native Common Grackles are my favorite and are easily distinguishable from the horrid, European Starling. They have a longer tail than do Starlings, stand more erect and have no freckles like Starlings but the jet black legs compared to the flesh colored legs of Starlings is a dead giveaway! Grackles seem to be more refined, respectable and proper. I love seeing them marching through lawns and pastures after and during Spring rains where they are feeding on earthworms forced to the surface because of the saturated soil.
