Travel: Hohenzollern Castle in Germany

By Veronica Arnold

Hohenzollern Castle is a popular site to visit in Germany. Definitely worth checking out, download the app before visiting, so you can scan the rooms and listen to the audiofile about the rooms that are open.

The family still owns it, so most of the castle is closed off. Around this time of year, they had a Santa and Elves, they sang Christmas carols, lights and trees decorated.... We got there there while sun was up, by the time we exited the castle, the sun had set and it was getting dark.

This place reminded me a lot of the Biltmore estate, the size and scale of the castle, the remote setting. The level of opulence was similar. The Peles Palace in Romania was fancier, so this level was like that of the American Vanderbilts.

Besides the fun snacks we could eat outside, the castle had cannons you could touch, the crown jewels of this family, a dungeon to go down down inside... draw bridges! If there is something that would make you think "castle," this place had it!
