A book from a treasured cousin Pretend this is a handwritten letter, deep blue ink on fine ivory parchment paper, instead of in electronic fashion headed for social media where I will click Mary Sandidge in hope it lands directly on her page. Dear Mary Lee, This morning I'm thinking how glad I am we're family. Give my cousin Donald a big hug for discovering you and never letting go. Your smile continues to be a ray of sunshine. If you had not shared your books with Mama back in the day and I had not been the recipient of the joy she found in them, I might not now be comforted by them and sending you this thank you note. Going back through At home in Mitford by Jan Karon, in audio book fashion this reading, I'm somehow just paying attention to, and gaining much deeper appreciation for, Father Tim's friend Absalom Greer. Perhaps my thoughts of family began there in chapter 14 as the shy sister started quietly placing steaming bowls of food before the men - in my mind's eye I saw the hands of our Aunt Almedia serving us at the old Leftwich table. She gave her quiet lifetime serving her parents, her siblings, nieces and nephews, friends and farmhands who came to that table and then went on their way. Karon's words take me beyond many of the church services I've experienced over the years and I just had to say thank you Mary Lee for putting them in Mom's hands. With love and gratitude, Linda This story was posted on 2024-11-26 10:51:52
