Ruby Myrtle Spicer, 102, Columbia, KY native (1922-2024)

Ruby Myrtle (Hill) Spicer of North Vernon, IN, passed away at 1:39 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Majestic Care of North Vernon. She was 102 years old. Born in Columbia on April 15, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Elic and Katie (Coomer) Hill.

A funeral service for Ruby will be held at 11amET on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the North Vernon Church of the Nazarene, 2195 N. State Highway 3, North Vernon, IN, with Rev. Caleb Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

The visitation for family and friends will be from 5pmET until 7pmET on Monday, November 25, 2024, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 420 South State Street, North Vernon, IN, and for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.


She married Elijah Spicer on November 23, 1985, in North Vernon; he preceded her in death on May 9, 2009.

Ruby worked at the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville and the Cardinal Grill in North Vernon. She was also a homemaker. Ruby was a member since 1949 of the North Vernon Church of the Nazarene where she served on the church board for 25 years, Missionary President for 20 years and on the food committee. She enjoyed crocheting, making quilts, baking pies, raising flowers, and collecting State plates.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon Pearson of North Vernon; Patricia (Patrick) Nugent of Rhode Island and Margaret Buscemi of Spring Hill, Florida; stepchildren, Kenny Spicer of Plant City, Florida and Helen (Charles) Graham of Brownstown; brother, Tommy Hill of Tennessee; sister, Cecil Harvey of Columbia, Kentucky; eighteen grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Robert Hill; second husband, Ewin Rowe and her third husband, Elijah Spicer; daughter, Linda Whitaker; son-in-law, Raymond Pearson, Dominic Buscemi, and Bill Whitaker; grandson, Chad, Tracy, and Andrew Pearson; and stepdaughter, Geraldine George; siblings, Chester and Arie Hill, Rosie Loy, Hazel Neal, Matrie Roach and Flossie Garman.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home in honor of Ruby to North Vernon Church of the Nazarene.
