Fifth graders visit Trabue Russell House A whole lot of teaching and learning went on when the historic Trabue Russell House recently filled up with Adair County Elementary School 5th graders. About 75 ACES fifth graders attended Thursday with another 75 on Friday. Volunteers joined Mary Anne and Barry Loy to help make it possible for students to experience life as it might have been when the Trabue Russell House and its builder Daniel Trabue were new to Columbia. Richard Phelps talked to the 5th graders about the life of Daniel Trabue; CPD Chief Evan Burton came to see the kids and took Mike Watson and Ellen Zornes' tour of the front rooms and the upstairs of the house (Donna Young and Beth Owens gave the tour with Mike Watson on Thursday; Marsha Reddick and Rita Marshall did period painting with the students; Sheila Willis and Debbie Cowan showed and discussed native and medical plants in the herb garden; Kathy Hadley and Barry Loy operated the apple press for cider making; Carl and Donna Shirley showed how to spin yarn from raw wool; Richard Phelps showed rifles and hunting items of that era; Students also toured the rose garden (with roses still in bloom). For tours and information about the historic property contact City Hall at 270-384-2501. This story was posted on 2024-11-14 07:54:39
