Local High School Bands compete in KMEA Semi-finals and Finals

The Adair County Band will perform a FREE Community encore at 7pmCT this evening, Monday, October 28, 2024, at Lindsey Wilson College Football Stadium.

By Amber Hobaugh

This past weekend, the best of the best high school bands from across the Bluegrass traveled to Elizabethtown High School to compete in the Kentucky Music Education Association's State Semi-finals contest.

The Class for 3A was stacked with some amazing talent as local bands from Adair, Russell and Taylor County advanced from the East and West Quarter-finals competition to participate in the event.

All three local bands presented astounding shows this year with Adair County High School's show theme "Peaks", Russell County's show "Bell-eve" and Taylor County's presentation of "A Stroke of Genius."

Although it is one of the most decorated programs in the State, the Adair County High School Marching Band was considered to be the underdog of the competition due to a tumultuous beginning. As many know, the program underwent a complete staff change that occurred right as the marching season was slated to begin.

Director Jonathon Holmes and Assistant Director Halen Pharis stepped in to work with a resilient group of only 49 students who, in true Adair County fashion, rose to the challenges that were laid before them.

As results were presented for the Semi-finals competition, only six bands could advance to the Finals portion of the contest later that evening. Receiving a Distinguished rating by the Kentucky Music Education Association and participating in the Finals event were: Murray High School (1st), Bourbon High School (2nd), Adair County High School (3rd), Hopkinsville High School (4th), Russell County High School (5th) and Taylor County High School (6th).

From there, this talented array of bands headed to L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium in Louisville for the Kentucky Music Education Association's 38th annual State Finals competition where Class 3A bands began performing at 6:30 p.m.

Giving it their all and leaving it all on the field, the Adair County High School marching band made their final trek towards the "Peak" of this season and presented their show with the grace, drive and determination that has been the legacy of their program for many years.

Finals results for the competition were presented at 11:30 p.m. (EST) that evening, while 30 of the best bands from Classes 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A were presented to the crowd one last time this season for retreat before the Awards Ceremony began.

For Class 3A, Murray High School was named the 2024 Grand Champion, Bourbon High School received Reserve Grand Champion, Russell County High School (3rd), Hopkinsville High School (4th), Adair County High School (5th) and Taylor County High School (6th).

To provide an example of the talent that was showcased at this competition and what a tight race that it really was; there were only 5.45 points separating first place Murray High School from sixth place Taylor County.

Adair County High School Band Director Jonathon Holmes had this to say, "Someone told me Rome wasn't built in a day. That is correct. Our "Rome", the Adair County Band, was built over many decades by countless blood sweat and tears, successes and failures to make it what it is. And it sustains, like the proud mountain of Everest that looms in the distance, admired by all and revered by many. It's the shining star of what kids can do when everything is "right". It's larger than any one person but it is there for any ONE person who can accept the responsibility of what it stands for. We are cut from good cloth and we are all quality ingredients of a recipe that ONLY leads to success. We look forward to the challenge because it calls to us and the top of the mountain needs to be viewed by the few who can accept that calling."

Holmes continued with, "Thank you for your love, friendship and support. To the many who have visited the band room and took time to shake my hand. For those that welcomed Mr. Pharis and I and believed in us when the situation seemed bleak. Now we look forward and keep doing the next right thing to lead us to where we want to be for our students... the top of the mountain."

The Adair County Band program would like to show their appreciation for all of the individuals, groups and businesses who have supported them this season. There will be a FREE Community encore performance this evening (Monday, October 28, 2024) at 7pmCT at Lindsey Wilson College Football Stadium. The students would love for everyone to come see this performance so that they may thank you "personally" for believing in them and the Adair County legacy this season.
