Carol Perkins: Happy Birthday to Me

Previous Column: The Bake Sale

By Carol Perkins

My good friend and former co-host of Susan and Carol-Unscripted told me this story, which was too good not to share. She has lived with her daughter Emily and her family for most of the year, which explains the location of this account. Now for Susan Chambers' latest adventure:

"I don't remember how I ended up there. Evidently, I hit my head trying to get out of bed because later, a knot popped out large enough that my daughter took me to Urgent Care. That's my only explanation for finding myself under my bed with no way to get out. I was trapped.

When I finally 'came to,' my face was inches from the bed slats, my nose rubbing against the wood. I yelled and yelled, but the mattress must have muffled my weak voice.

No one came. I tried to inch my way out, but my body wouldn't cooperate, so I waited. And I waited. I counted the slats.

Finally, I heard my son-in-law in the hall bathroom, but couldn't get his attention. At least I didn't think he heard me, but he later said he heard 'something.'

'I looked in the bedroom,' Timmy said, 'and Susan wasn't in bed. That was unusual. Then I saw a foot. A foot sticking out from under the bed.'

Carol: When Susan told me this, I thought of the foot of the witch in the Wizard of Oz.

At least someone now knew where I was. I heard him call for Emily; they lifted the mattress and eased me out.

'What are you doing under there?' was probably the first question.

My answer was, 'I have no clue.'

I didn't want to go to Urgent Care, but my daughter insisted. Thankfully, no real damage occurred except my confusion about what happened.

I have fainted many times, but when I woke, I was always in the same place. To find myself under a bed with no memory of how I ended up there was eerie. Even if I fell out of bed and hit my head, how did I get UNDER the bed? I can't even walk without help!

The old saying, 'You never know where life will take you,' is true. On my birthday, when I had planned to eat lunch with my friends and family, I ended up under my bed with a knot on my head. Happy Birthday to me."
