Bernheim Forest and Arboretum Fall Plant Sale is Oct 18 From Lynette Cox Clermont, KY - Bernheim Forest and Arboretum is pleased to announce its much anticipated Fall Plant Sale on Friday, October 18, from 9amET until 3pmET at the Bernheim Visitor Center, 2075 Clermont Rd, Clermont, KY. "Fall is the ideal time to enhance your landscape," says Renee Frith, Director of Horticulture and Sustainable Landscapes at Bernheim Forest and Arboretum. "Healthy roots produce healthy shoots! Planting in Fall limits the need for supplemental water and allows the plant to focus on root growth for a strong and healthy Spring flush." The plant sale will feature woody trees and shrubs, sun--and shade-loving perennials, and pollinator plant kits. Most of the plants offered at the sale are native U.S. species, with a unique selection of introduced species. Why do we love natives so much? Native plants are well-adapted to the environment and support local wildlife, particularly pollinators. The sale offers a diverse selection of plants suitable for various garden spots, whether sunny, shaded, wet, or dry. Bernheim's horticulture team has curated shade and sun plant plug kits and contains 15 plants (3 plugs from 5 unique species). These young plants have a root mass about 4 inches deep by 2 inches square. Plant kits can be ordered online at bernheim.org/fall-plant-plugs. The shade plant plug kit features Autumn fern 'Brillance,' blue wood aster, a U.S. native plant that blooms in September, golden groundsel, dense ground cover with striking golden-yellow blooms in spring, oakleaf foamflower, which has beautiful upright blooms in spring and burgundy fall colors, and the long flower alumroot, which has a flowering stem that rises about dense mounds of silvery foliage in early summer. The sun plant plug kit is perfect for establishing or enhancing a pollinator garden. The blooming starts in early June with the 'Ruby Star' coneflower and continues through October. Coneflowers are easy to grow and thrive in full sun. They attract pollinators, and their seeds serve as a food source for birds in the winter. Other plants included in the sun plant plug kit include Eastern bee balm, a hummingbird attracting with clump-forming pale violet tubular flowers in July through September, New England aster, a U.S. native with rich purple blooms, Carolina lupine, a robust plant that stands 3 to 4 feet in height with yellow blooms, and the rattlesnake master with silver strap-like foliage and thistle-like blueish-silver flowers. Bernheim's Horticulture team will be on hand to provide advice on plant selection and care, ensuring that attendees find the perfect additions to their landscape.
