Russell County Homemakers share special week Extension Homemaker Association Week is October 13-19, 2024 - see special events this week at end of story By Sue Foley, President Celebrating Kentucky Extension Homemakers Week in Russell County allows the Russell County Extension Homemakers to showcase what being a homemaker is all about and open their activities to the local public. The Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association (KEHA) is a volunteer organization that works to improve the quality of life for families and communities through leadership development, volunteer services, and education. KEHA was developed in cooperation with the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. Across the state, County Extension Agents for Family and Consumer Sciences work closely with KEHA members and clubs to provide educational programming and coordinate community activities. KEHA was established in 1932, and across the state members annually complete more than 600,000 volunteer hours. Since 1977, the KEHA has actively supported the University of Kentucky Ovarian Research Fund, and actively donates and brings members for screenings each year. The Russell County Extension Homemakers support statewide initiatives as well as help the local community. Our local Homemakers provided over 4,183 hours of volunteer service in the 2023-2024 year. Additionally, the Russell County Extension Homemakers currently have three Master Clothing Volunteers who help children and adults learn to sew. Russell County Homemakers donate their time to helping God's Food Pantry, the Lake Cumberland Children's Advocacy Center, Russell County Schools, Russell County Hospital, Fair Oaks Nursing Home, and others in the community to assist those in need. Finally, each year the Russell County Extension Homemakers provide a one-year college scholarship to a high school senior or non-traditional student who applies and is selected. The Russell County Extension Homemakers are more than a simple volunteer service organization. These individuals support the local community, donate their time to serve as volunteers in many capacities, and help friends, family, and the local community improve their quality of life. Homemakers are always looking to offer leadership and fellowship to others, and anyone is welcome to join their organization. Join the Russell County Extension Office in celebrating KEHA Week, October 13 through 19, and see how you can support our community.
