Newest crop: solar power generation

By Linda Waggener

A road trip from Marrowbone, KY in Cumberland County to Summer Shade in Metcalfe County, heading west across Highway 90, led my sister and me to this unusual view on the rolling hills of Randolph Road.

Among the soybean crops and corn fields ready to harvest, we saw a massive solar farm that went on field after field after field. It turned out to be Glover Creek Solar.

A google search provided details in Solar Industry Magazine, "...Glover Creek was the second solar project to receive a permit from the state's Electric Generation and Transmission Siting Board and is the first solar project to be constructed in Metcalfe County..."

Kirkland Appraisals provided a 108 page study at this link on the impact of a solar farm on approximately 322.44 acres out of a parent tract assemblage of 968.20 acres located on Randolph Summer Shade Road, Summer Shade, KY.

A 316 page report for a Power Generation Permit for review and approval by the Kentucky State Siting Board to construct a solar energy system.

This four-way stop on Highway 90 between Marrowbone and Summer Shade is historically known as "Bloody Crossing" because of all the wrecks over the years. The sign on the way into Summer Shade points to Glasgow, straight ahead, Edmonton to the north, and Tompkinsville to the south.

The very old compares to the very new scenes heading north from Hwy 90 toward Edmonton. Before we saw the huge solar farm, we spotted this little abandoned homestead on the corner of Patty Wade Road and Randolph Road just outside of Summer Shade, KY.
